My thanks to Rep. Jim McDermott (Democrat, serving the Seventh District of Washington State) for his mention of an opinion piece I wrote for The Washington Post.
Congressman McDermott serves on the Subcommittee on Trade and chairs the Income Security and Family Support Subcommittee. As a physician, Rep. McDermott has a particular interest in issue related to health care. In 1987, McDermott served as a Foreign Service medical officer based in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo).
Jim McDermott is a physician, veteran and lawmaker. His years of service, at home and abroad, are much appreciated.

Robert Smirke made this engraving for Joel Barlow's epic poem "The Columbiad" (1807).
Robert Smirke was an English artist. Barlow depicted the cruelty of British forces in occupied New York City as contrary to the sentiments of the British people.
